Mon 14th March: Wine, dogs and a new van

My day was carefully mapped out as I had to figure in the sampan, which needs to be booked in advance, the hire van, AFCD and Acorn's opening times as well as letting volunteer Rachael know what my timing was as she was coming to help me get a couple of dogs over for their rabies vaccination and license update.  Posy and Jackson have been with HKDR since Pokfulam days, and Rachael was their favourite volunteer during the four years we were based there.  They now live on Lamma but still love Rachael and are like putty in her hands, while being cautious with others. (The photo shows Jackson looking at the space where his old home used to be, the site still remaining completely empty and unused).

It made everything easy not having to worry about getting Posy and Jackson into crates or onto a boat, as there were others that also needed to tag along.  One of them was Jeremy, who having suddenly become totally blind needed encouragement and one-on-one attention.

To start with the van was late so in the end my plans, as usual, came to nothing but at least I achieved what needed to be done, and was able to send the dogs back to Lamma with enough time to go to the office.

I had completely forgotten to mention that we have another donation of fine wines which we are selling for the very low price of $50 a bottle and there is still a fair selection of red, white and rose to available.  They are being stored at the Education Centre across the road from our Homing Centre at 21 Main Street, so drop by any time during opening hours (10am to 6pm) if you want to take advantage of the bargain price.  These aren't cheap wines, just being sold at a cheap price.

I was overjoyed to learn that our new van should be delivered to Tai Po this week, and what a difference that will make to daily life.  I can't wait to see it, even though we still need a driver after Hing's retirement.

Our new website is also taking shape behind the scenes, with special thanks due to volunteer Andrea who has been working on this despite officially being on holiday and knee-deep in snow!  That's dedication for you.

Another huge project which we have already started planning is a total renovation of our Tai Po Homing Centre site, something that is going to be expensive but which cannot be ignored any longer. It's just one of the many "must do" things on our list, so you can see why everyone is always kept busy and why volunteers are our lifeblood.

For now we are still without a showcase for our lovely dogs other than Facebook, so here are a few that need a special mention or a foster home that will provide a quiet recovery space for those needing surgery.  In this case I'm talking about Kimbo, who is waiting to have his legs fixed but can't do so until we have a foster home for him.

Golden retriever Gracie is currently in a foster home where they have taken very good care of her, but she now needs to move on and we are hoping her next home will be for ever.  She is nine years old but is already suffering from bad arthritis so can only do short walks.  In fact that should make her more appealing to homes where long walks might not be possible.  For both Kimbo and Gracie please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com

Sweet Mango has no health or behaviour problems, she just needs a mention because she is such a lovely girl, and who ever is lucky enough to take her home won't regret it.  For more information on any dogs, you can contact me at sally@hongkongdogrescue.com and I can recommend those who would be suitable, or pass your enquiry on to others who can help.
