Fri 6th May: I really hate breeders

Little Tanner will be coming back today

Before anything else I have to mention that, as expected, the ex-breeder bichon frise was almost immediately adopted so is no longer available.  Also as expected there were many enquiries about him, and lots of those were from very nice homes so it's a shame we can't clone these little dogs and give each potential adopter one of their own.  Bibby came to us completely unexpectedly, rejected by the breeder because he was born with a toe missing (so I assume couldn't be sold for a lot of money), and we never know if and when there will be a next time, but my blog is the place to find out first.

I'm sure I don't need to remind all of those who read my blog about my feelings regarding breeders and the pet trade in general.  Their motive is money and nothing else, and for the most part they're illegally operating in unregistered premises which are hidden away in the most inaccessible areas of the New Territories.  The dogs rarely come to us completely healthy (Bibby has a bad ear infection) as they're crammed together in cages, or dark and dirty corners.  These dogs aren't microchipped or licensed, proof that the breeders are illegal and that the  Cap 139B Animal Trading Laws (https://www.elegislation.gov.hk/hk/cap139B!en) are a waste of the paper they were written on.

Otto was found abandoned

Another ex-breeder dog will be coming to us on Monday, this time a male rottweiler, also without an indentifying microchip.  The terrible thing about this case is that the dog had been abandoned in a remote area, either by the breeder or by the person who bought him, and was being fed by one of the many volunteers who spend their own money and time helping such strays.   In this particular case the rottweiler was caught and treated for a maggot-infested wound on his ear, and because he was so easy to handle we were asked if we would take him in.  Of course we said yes, so after he arrives on Monday he'll go straight to a vet to have his ears checked for infection, and for a heartworm and tick fever test.  We're fully expecting that he will be positive for heartworm since he's been living as a stray.
Fabian and Mandy, perfect family dogs

Dogs that are purebreeds usually find homes without too much trouble (shibas being the exception), so I expect this rottweiler boy (I'll call him Otto) will also be one of the lucky ones, but it's upsetting that the sweetest and easiest of dogs that don't have breed labels are left behind.  There are too many to name, but medium-sized Fabian and Mandy are two that immediately spring to mind, as well as little Candy, also at Tai Po.  Why haven't they gone to a new home yet, when they're everything you could possibly want in a family dog?
Candy is a petite medium size
