Thurs 6th Jan: All about puppies

Older puppies waiting for adoption at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre

Some days there are no adoptions to write about, but that doesn't mean we aren't all busy with the many things that are involved in running a dog rescue charity.  Eva (Sit), who wears two hats as a Tai Po Homing Centre staff member as well as handling all of our PR and events, is always dealing with upcoming fundraisers, currently of course all smaller and with fewer attendees permitted.  It's very disappointing that some have had to be suddenly cancelled due to the latest government restrictions, but at least some can go ahead.

Our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre Manager, Iris, is working with the contractor on the new Homing Centre-to-be in Kennedy Town, and that too is much more difficult than it would normally be, with deadlines clashing with Chinese New Year and the ongoing problems with bringing in building materials from China.

Cindy, our Foster Coordinator, is always busy trying to find foster homes and dealing with all of the questions about food, vaccinations, health issues and everything else that goes with puppy care, as well as adult dogs that need go for surgery, or be picked up from vet clinics.

Even the day-to-day care of so many dogs and puppies at our Homing Centres is a non-stop job.  I stopped by at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre today after picking up Lamma dog Alicia from Acorn, where she's been staying after suddenly losing the use of her back legs.  Unfortunately the steroid injections in her spine don't seem to have helped, but she was so stressed being in a hospital cage that I agreed she should move to Ap Lei Chau.  It was actually very distressing for me to see how terrified Alicia was during the drive from Sai Ying Pun to the Homing Centre, and it didn't help her condition that she was thrashing around in the travel crate.  Iris had set up a fenced area upstairs so Alicia could be separated from others, and while she was at least relieved to be out of the crate I could see the fear in her eyes.  She knows me of course, but as a very nervous dog being moved from her familiar environment on Lamma is quite a dramatic experience for her.

The younger puppies at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre

Being at the Homing Centre and seeing all of the puppies in their various spaces was also quite a shock for me, as they grow so quickly that it's hard to recognise them from one week to the next.   We have all sizes, colours and types (except purebreeds, although Bernie looks very much like a labrador), so if you're interested in adopting please start by completing the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

To see all of the puppies including some currently in foster homes, here's the link to the Sunday puppy party once again:  Puppy Adoption Day 2nd Jan 2022.
