Fri 10th Dec: Please don't abandon your dogs

Fuzzy-faced Treacle is losing her home

We get asked many times whether there has been an increase in dogs being abandoned or surrendered over the past year or so, and the answer is a definite yes.  In fact the rate is increasing so alarmingly that I have to wonder just how many more dogs we can take in, not only because of space for the dogs themselves but also because the small staff and handful of regular volunteers are already overwhelmed with having to look after the hundreds staying at our Tai Po Homing Centre.  When there are fantastic young adult dogs and even puppies that aren't being adopted, when in the past I think they would definitely have walked in and walked straight out again, you know there's a big problem.

Just today I received four surrender requests for adult dogs, one of them being for Treacle, a dog that was adopted from HKDR as a puppy.   For such dogs who have been in loving home their entire lives I really, really don't want them to have to come to the Homing Centre.  It's traumatic enough for a dog that considers itself a family member to suddenly find that it's no longer wanted, but then to move from a home environment with both human and dogs friends to an outside enclosure surrounded by stange dogs is absolutely terrifying.  Treacle is ten years old, very lovely and loving, and I want to ask now if anyone will offer her a new home?  Please complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hoongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ if that's you.

Bimble is really hurting after being dumped

Another such dog, adopted from HKDR as a puppy and then suddenly brought back is Bimble (as we called her), and she is so traumatised that she's refusing to eat.  We have moved her from Ap Lei Chau to Tai Po to see if it will help, but she obviously misses her family terribly. Please don't think that dogs don't have feeling and emotions, or that they don't suffer mentally when abandoned like this because they do.

Our 2022 Cube Calendars are now available for sale, and you can pick up your copies at either of our Homing Centres (along with wine at Ap Lei Chau).  Also thanks to a kind sponsor who is covering the cost, every adopter during the month of December will be given a free Cube Calendar as a thank you gift.

Remember every purchase of items at our Homing Centres is equivalent to making a donation to HKDR and the dogs, and apart from the Cube Calendars and wine, we still have the antique Chinese paintings (great Christmas gifts!) and T-shirts for humans, plus toys and all accessories for dogs.  Please drop by any time to check out our merchandise.

  1. It is so upsetting to read that these beautiful girls have been abandoned by their families. It's heart-breaking! I hope Treacle and Bimble find new homes soon. XXX
