Thurs 5th Jan: Bad news for breeders, good news for the dogs

These babies are now old enough to go to Whiskers N Paws
Normal life has to continue regardless of the new situation with the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre and our quest for a solution, so after a short interview with TVB Jade and TVB Pearl I was back at AFCD in Pokfulam where I had expected to be taking out a couple of smaller (medium) dogs.  However for different reasons they hadn't yet been issued their "leaving passes" and have to stay a bit longer, so instead I left with four young puppies (surprise).  They are all very friendly and waggy-tailed and will be at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday, at the same time as the first group of the pending baby puppies will also be making their debut.  I can see we're going to have a very full house, or puppy pen, on Sunday, and hopefully a flurry of adopters too.

Soft and cuddly Goofy has a forever home
At least some of the older pups won't be coming back as they have been adopted mid-week, one of them being Chess.  He was interviewed last Saturday, New Year's Eve, and after a family discussion and another at-home meeting had his adoption confirmed.  Derek and Trisha's brother, Carter, was missing from Whiskers N Paws last time and the reason was that his foster home want to keep him. That's a perfect reason for being absent.   Goofy has also had his permanent residency confirmed, having clearly won the heart of his new "mother".  How could you not love such a special boy?

Derek is also quite a special boy, and after starting off spending the days at my neighbour's house he has now been invited to stay overnight too.  I don't know who's happier, me or Derek, as the small puppy area is now full of little ones.   Anyway Derek will be at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday, looking and smelling good thanks to his foster care.

Now for some really good news, and an answer for everyone who sends me internet or Facebook posts regarding puppies for sale or "adoption".  From March onwards any person who is selling, or asking money for "adoption", will be required to obtain a license and show the license number on any advertisement.  It's going to be really important that everyone who cares about these horrible and unscrupulous breeders keep an eye open for any such postings and report to AFCD.  These new laws will only be effective with the help of the general public, and hopefully when enough breeders have been busted it will scare others off from trying to make easy money from the suffering of the animals. Even now if you suspect there in any illegal breeder activity going on somewhere, please report to the SPCA Hotline 27111000 so the inspectors can go and check it out.

For the Cap 139B amendment, the negative vetting will be completed on 18/1/2017, and the new law will commence on 20/3/2017.

With the new 139B commencing, this type of business in selling dogs will no longer be legal, even with adoption, the person/organisation will need to obtain an exemption from AFCD to show that they are doing genuine non profit adoption.
