Mon 16th Jan: The benefits of adopting a senior

Gorgeous Izzy
Today's new arrival from AFCD was a gorgeous little terrier girl, officially a Yorkshire terrier cross but she has much longer legs - as well as a horrible mammary tumour, the reason for her being abandoned.  She's no youngster but certainly doesn't look her fourteen years, and of course she was very happy to snuggle on my lap for the drive to and from Acorn.  Surgery will take place within the next few days and then hopefully she will be fit and ready for adoption.

Many people are willing to adopt older dogs for several reasons, one being that they are usually very easy to take care of and don't require much more than a soft bed, cuddles and nice food. It's also true that these cases are heartbreaking, and it's lucky that there are enough kind-hearted citizens who want to help.  An additional reason for senior dogs being an ideal choice is that there isn't the long-term commitment required, as small dogs in particular can live to be anything up to twenty years old.

While I was at Acorn with the new terrier Izzy, I took a look at the corgi pup who was brought to us after having been found abandoned and infected with parvovirus.  I hadn't realised that he is still very much a baby, around eight weeks old and still quite tiny, so it's something of a miracle that he seems to be doing OK, at least still alive.

Davey watching training videos?
Happily our current bunch of puppies are all well and healthy, and although I'm still wading through all the adoption and foster paperwork from the weekend I was happy to receive this lovely photo from Davey's foster home.  I was told that he's a very sweet and well-behaved boy, which I already knew of course, so if anyone is interested in adopting please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com to arrange a meeting.  There are still plenty of beautiful babies waiting for homes and you can meet them all next Sunday at Whiskers N Paws.
There are 5 in this litter all needing homes

Please note that this will be the last puppy afternoon before Chinese New Year when Whiskers N Paws will be closed over the holiday.  If you are interested in meeting any puppies or fostering for the Lunar New Year break, please let Cindy know.  You can see all of the puppies available here:
