Sat 16th Sept: Let your dogs sniff!

Young and playful Grainger

The reason I don't (or rarely) mention dogs that have been taken for trial adoptions is because they don't always work out.  Super-sweet poodle-type Grainger, for example, spent a few days in a trial home but came back today because the resident dog didn't like having her space invaded.  The matter of personal space for any dog is important, especially for sleeping and eating, so unless the home is large enough to allow for a new and resident dog to be able to get to know each other in their own time, it's often too stressful for a successful outcome.

Brady is 2 years old

Samoyed Brady had plenty of space and no competition in terms of other dogs, but the work and school commitments of the family mean they don't have the time to satisfy Brady's needs for attention and company.  Samoyeds are a demanding breed in general, and they bark for attention and from excitement. Here is what the current foster says about Brady:

- Brady is kid-friendly and gets along well with other dogs. However, he can be a bit bossy around grown-up dogs.

- He has a tendency to bark non-stop, which can influence other dogs in the neighborhood to bark as well.

- Brady requires strict adherence to his routine, as deviating from it makes him restless and irritated.

- During walks, it is important to strictly follow his routine and allow him an hour of exploration time. Hurrying or bringing him back home early can cause him to become agitated. He may also jump on you if the walk routine is not followed or if the route is changed.

- Brady has a good memory and can find his way back home.

- Notably, he is impeccably house-trained and only eliminates outside.

These points really underline what applies to almost every dog, at least as far as the need for routine is concerned, as well as the importance of allowing time on walks for dogs to sniff as much as they want.  This is actually as important to a dog as the physical exercise of walks, and it's something that is often overlooked.   Taking a dog out regularly, and for long enough to allow for social interaction - which includes the sniffing of other dogs' smells - is part of having a dog, and if you can't provide this time then you are depriving your dog of its basic needs.

If you can offer a home to either Brady or Grainger, or any other dog, please complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/.

Bijou

The three French bulldogs arrived today, and happily they're all young and very sweet.  There are two girls and one boy, so again if you're interested please complete the adoption questionnaire.
Babette

If you're going to Whiskers N Paws on Sunday you'll have the chance to meet two adorable and very small-sized doglets, Jax and Johnnie.  They are currently staying in foster care (Instagram @why_i_foster), and even the foster family feel for the charms of the sister, Jill, so she will be staying forever.  Going back to what I said earlier, regardless of size all dogs need regular walks and time to play with other dogs, sniff for as long as they want, to to enjoy time outside the home.
