Tues 8th June: Saying goodbye again, and hello

When we first moved to the Tai Po Homing Centre on the first of May 2010 I used to spend a lot of time there, helping to convert what had been a country home and fruit orchard into a sanctuary for unwanted dogs.  We started with around a hundred, those that had come with us from the Pokfulam Kennels, and then of course the numbers grew - and grew - and the few very large original enclosures were divided and then sub-divided to create more areas where groups of dogs could live together  harmoniously.

Dewy enjoying a day out

I remember every dog from that period because I got to know them all and was there when they arrived, even if I hadn't actually taken them from AFCD myself.   I remember when Dewy came to the Centre as she gave birth very soon afterwards, but sadly all of her pups died.  I don't know why Dewy was never adopted as she was always a very sweet dog, medium sized and a pretty girl, but anyway she was very much loved by the staff and volunteers at Tai Po.  Today Dewy's life ended after she had been diagnosed with what was almost certainly cancer, and while we'd brought her back to the Centre to spend her final days or weeks being spoiled rotten with as many treats and cuddles as she wanted, the end came very quickly.

The two new dogs arrived at Tai Po today from AFCD in Pokfulam, and as I mentioned they had been languishing there for a very long time while the cruelty case they were part of waited to go to court, and all for nothing as it turned out.  They're medium sized and still young adults, and I'll be sharing their photos as soon as I can.  I hope after what they have been through they will finally get the life and home they deserve.

The chihuahua-cross girl was taken to the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre of course, and I hope she settles quickly.  Gigi apparently belonged to an old man who was in tears when he surrendered her to AFCD, and maybe it was because he lived in Public Housing. Gigi is ten years old and seems to be in good health, but of course she'll go for a vet check to make sure.

Although not an event organised by HKDR (all of that seems like a distant memory now) there is an event this coming Saturday which you can enjoy with your dogs.

HKDR will be at the.wildlot’s Wild Woof Party this Saturday 12th for an adoption session for Tai Po dogs and a mini charity sale!
A group of our available medium to large sized “Top Dogs” will be coming from HKDR Tai Po Homing Centre, hoping to meet their forever families!
▪️Date: 12 June 2021
▪️Time: 2-4pm for HKDR (the party will run till 6pm)
