Mon 18th Dec: Time for forever homes for Cleo and Rafi

I couldn't believe this was really Matchstick
I just have to share this update on a tiny teacup poodle that came to us from a breeder  with one of her legs so badly deformed that it had to be amputated. As if that wasn't enough, the knee on the remaining back leg was so weak that it needed surgery, as it was going to have to support Matchstick for the rest of her life.  Dr Tony at Acorn is the best vet I know for this kind of repair work and he did a brilliant job, and luckily Matchstick had an amazing foster home where she lived with another ex-HKDR Yorkie Bella, also a breeder reject who took time to regain full health.  Matchstick was only a year old but no potential adopters were interested in a three-legged dog, and finally when she and the Yorkie had bonded so closely that they couldn't be parted, Matchstick was adopted and became Ash.  Looking at the photos I had to check old emails to convince myself that this was really the tiny crippled weakling that had been brought to Ap Lei Chau.

Once again I have to say thank you to all of those involved, the foster and Dr Tony, and to remind potential adopters that behind the sad specimens you might meet at the Homing Centre are beautiful and healthy dogs just waiting to be transformed.

"Hi Sally,

I couldn’t help but send these photos of Ash and Bella on their first Christmas together.

Both the girls are doing great, Tony and the vets at Acorn did an amazing job with Ash.

So nice seeing them improve together from what they’ve both been to physically and mentally".

Ash and Bella

We have another current case of a lovely little dog called Cleo, the one I wrote about before who I had first assumed was a sickly puppy because of her small size.  She was also so thin I thought she must be very ill, but now I'm sure she was simply starving after having been thrown out of her home and unable to find food for herself.  Cleo was taken for fostering and has gone from being a terrified girl who was too scared to leave the home to a happy and healthy dog who now goes for walks.  She is still small-sized of course, although she must weigh more than the seven or so kilos that she first did.  She is eating a few meals a day to gain much-needed weight, and she is ready for a forever home now.  If you are interested in adopting Cleo please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, bearing in mind that Cleo is a very small dog whatever she looks like.
Cleo can walk outside now

Rafi (centre) likes his foster home too much
Another foster dog who is waiting for his forever and final home is Rafi, now coming up for a year old.  He is very happy in his current foster home but that in itself isn't always a good thing because the longer he stays the harder it is for him to leave.  Being a sharpei cross and as part of the breed characteristics, Rafi is incredibly loyal and forms a very strong bond with his humans, as demonstrated very well when he greeted his ex-fosters from his baby days with so much love and enthusiasm.  He would make a brilliant family pet/guard dog for a home that needed both, and I would really love him to find that very soon. Again, please contact Cindy if this is the kind of dog you think would be a good match for your home and family.  (Rafi is good with kids and cats too).
