Fri 8th Dec: Farewell old Bean

Jelly just has all her teeth removed so looks a bit dozy, poor girl
The old peke boy wasn't doing well today and needed propping up to be able to lap any water, so he was sent back to Acorn along with the two King Charles Cavaliers for their health checks and vaccinations.  I wanted to give the peke a name before he went, so the female became Jelly while he was called (Mr) Bean, and Andrea made sure he had lots of cosy blankets in his crate before putting him in the van.

I wanted to drop off some baby puppy food at AFCD for the young litter of eight, as there's no allowance made for age when it comes to feeding and these youngsters need appropriate care.  I was upset to see a new dog in the kennels who had just given birth, and may still have been in the process as I could only see two newborns.  Large dogs usually have litters of at least eight, and often more, but I was told this dog wasn't tending to her pups so it's quite possible they won't survive.  As harsh as it might sound that may not be a bad thing given the large number of puppies being born at this time, and the few homes available for mixed breeds.  The staff at the AFCD kennels are kind and well-meaning, but there's only so much they can do to help so fate will decide the outcome of this litter.

Poor old Bean couldn't lift his little head
After leaving Pokfulam I went to Acorn to meet up with the dogs and talk to Dr Seems about Mr Bean, and although his vital signs were still strong and there was nothing obviously wrong, the fact that he was unable to stand or even sit without being helped indicated something going on in the brain.  I made the decision then that it wasn't right to continue as he would need intensive round-the-clock care which we are unable to provide, and held him until he had gone.

Assumed brothers, William and Harry
On a brighter note the two King Charles spaniels are the sweetest of characters, desperate for attention and clearly very close to each other.  They have both been licensed as seven years old and will need to be desexed and have their teeth seen to, as well as their dirty and smelly ears, but they are otherwise fine barring dry eye in the boy with only one eye left.  I wanted to give them names to match their breed so they are now (Princes) William and Harry.

The additional breeder dogs didn't arrive today but were dropped off at a vet clinic for us to collect on Saturday morning, so we will have new Yorkies, bichon frise and poodles, seven in total I believe.

It's going to be a crazily busy weekend with so many new dogs and all the Christmas events, so please don't forget the dogs and that we need homes or fosters! Emails Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com about fostering, or complete the Adoption Questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt) if you can give a dog a home for life.
