Thurs 8th June: Two (and more) happy endings

The new version of Gherkin

I'd like to share a couple of special stories today, both of which are about small dogs whose lives had been very hard and who both suffered different kinds of trauma.  The first of these is a Pekingese who came to us as one of three ex-breeder pekes and the only boy.  He was a bit of a mess in the sense that he was already blind in one eye and the other eye was also in trouble, and he needed to have a lot of excess skin removed from his face to allow him to breathe more easily.  The other two pekes were  quickly adopted, but Gherkin wasn't exactly a poster boy with a lot of fans wanting to give him a home.  However, we never say never, and here is Gherkin's heartwarming happy ever after story:
Gherkin when he first arrived

"I’m thrilled to have him! Gherkin is a perfect little dog, so well behaved, friendly and loving — I’ve never even heard him growl once! He was fully toilet trained within a few weeks and walks like a dream, although he obviously can’t manage stairs with being so blind. He really is a miracle dog. He came to me after being so badly neglected that he needed an eye removed, surgery on the other eye, excess skin removed from his face, teeth extracted and castrated — along with an ear infection — but he recovered much quicker and better than I ever could have imagined. As far as I know, he had spent all six years of his life in a breeding prison and had never been outside. His body was so soft when he arrive that it seemed like he didn’t have any muscle at all, so we started with little walks in my apartment corridor — me leading him with bits of dog bacon — and soon progressed to taking the lift to the lobby, followed by little walks outside on the street. Now, he loves his walks and we stroll all around the neighbourhood. He loves to stop and say hello and be petted by everyone so he now has a neighbourhood fan club, with security guards at my local swimming pool, college, bicycle shop and the Manulife insurance staff all coming out to play with him on every walk — no one can resist his endearing character and a 15-minute walk often takes an hour! It’s impossible not to love him and no one loves him more than me. I’m looking forward to us spending many happy years together now :)) "

The second story isn't yet a happy ever after one but almost as good, as little Jinks has been offered a foster home with the promise of a wheelchair to help him get around since he has no use of his front legs.   I'm so touched that even knowing about his condition his potential foster still said yes to giving him a chance, and I really hope that the next photos I see of Jinks will be him whizzing round on his wheels.

Adorable Jolene

As I mentioned yesterday Jolene has also found her happy forever home, and I know she's going to have a great life.

Big baby Branston, now Teddy

Another happy adoption photo I can now share is that of Branston, now called Teddy, whose forever status has been confirmed.
Baby Berry

And finally, although not an adoption photo yet we know that puppy Berry will be leaving on Friday.  There are still two left from this lovely litter of little ones in case you're interested.
