Tues 14th March: Mark the date

Totally unrelated, but these Elgin Street puppies are still waiting

Mark the date, Saturday 6th May, as we will celebrate our first big event in I-can't-even-remember, but a very long time.  This will of course be for and with the dogs, and will offer something for all levels of size and fitness, so make sure you keep the day cleared so you don't miss out on the fun.  For any potential sponsors who would be interested in being a part of this celebration, please contact Eva Sit at eva@hongkongdogrescue.com for details.

Before I forget I would like to offer my condolences to the families of the two dogs who were poisoned the other day after enjoying playtime in a pet-friendly park (https://www.thestandard.com.hk/section-news/section/4/250671/Poison-warning-over-dead-dogs).  There's really nothing worse than watching a dog suffer so horribly, and for no good reason, and sadly this is an ongoing situation that occurs all over the place.  One dog family who lost their dogs in the same way set up an Instagram page @gamma.hkg to detail and warn dog owners about all of the cases and where they happened, but even so it's something that you never expect.  The bait, usually meat, is often hidden under bushes and in places that are difficult to spot, so if your dog is one that will happily eat anything that is lying around, please be extra careful.

I want to make today's post to be about our Tai Po dogs, the hundreds of born-unwanted or loved-and-discarded, the young and old, a variety of colours and sizes, but all sharing the desire to be part of a family.  Many of our volunteers, especially the long-term and dedicated ones, share photos of the dogs on their own social media pages, so there are constant reminders to me of the names and faces that I may have known as puppies that lived with me on Lamma, or who came to HKDR in subsequent years.  As reassuring as it is to know that all of the dogs are loved by our staff and volunteers, and even the most shy have their dedicated fans, I would truly love to be able to write about more adoptions from Tai Po.

Puppies are by nature irresistibly cute, and that's why people are drawn to them of course.  I'm  by no means immune to puppy eyes, even the smell, and the sheer joyfulness of puppy love.  However there is also a lot to be said for the adult dog who has his or her own unique personality, and who has outgrown the often-annoying puppy or adolescent behaviour.  Some of the dogs at Tai Po came to us as baby puppies and have only even known life as a Homing Centre dog, while others have enjoyed being family members before coming to us.  Each one of them is as deserving of a home as the other, and if you would like to know more about any of the dogs and who would be most suitable for your home, please take some time to looks through the long list of dogs-in-waiting at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/dogs/

Our Homing Centre staff, whether at Tai Po or Kennedy Town, will be happy to help with suggestions if you need some advice, and to introduce you to those that they feel would be the best match.  Please just start by completing the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ , or if you would prefer to foster, please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.  We are still very much in need of puppy foster homes.
