Thurs 24th March: Behind the scenes

The weekend (and the end of the month) is creeping up on us again, and as always that means Whiskers N Paws on Sunday, and hopefully adoptions over both days.

Izzy has been adopted

I'm sure you know by now that we have dogs and puppies waiting for homes at three locations, Tai Po, Kennedy Town and Soho, as well as those in foster homes.  I was reminded about these foster dogs when pom Izzy was adopted this week, because sometimes it's easy to forget the long-termers (unless you're Cindy, our Foster Coordinator).  Izzy had to have corrective surgery on her knees, typically for a small dog, so she needed to be in foster care during her recovery.

Gorgeous puppy Cola

Puppy Cola only came to us quite recently as an urgent case, because she had a badly-healed leg break following inexpert surgery.  Even though bone surgery is best left until a dog is fully grown, in some cases there's no option but to go ahead when a puppy can't develop properly in its current condition. Dr Tony at Acorn was able to re-break and re-set the fracture, as well as fixing a serious patella luxation, however the final outcome will only be known when Cola has stopped growing.   Cola is seriously cute, and I hope she has the same luck as Hudson in finding a forever home.

A boy and his dog, Hudson

Puppy Hudson couldn't even stand when he came to us, and he could only pull himself along on his front legs.  His corrective knee surgeries were carried out by Dr Elaine at Concordia, another very experienced veterinary surgeon, and Hudson was subsequently able to walk and play quite happily.  He may also need hip surgery when he is fully grown, but with the knees being properly aligned it will hopefully mean everything else falling into place.  I'm delighted to say that Hudson has also now been adopted.

There are two very important factors in cases such as all three of these mentioned, the first being an experienced and capable vet surgeon, and the second being the foster homes that offer to care for the dogs and puppies during their recovery period.  I should also mention the third necessity, and that's the money needed to pay for such expert veterinary services, and that's why donations are vital to us.  Please help if you can: www.hongkongdogrescue.com/donate/

If you can provide foster care for any dogs recovering from surgery, or puppies that are waiting for adoption, please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com for information.  All foster homes are supplied with food and any other equipment needed, such as bed, bowls and fences.  All we ask is for some space in your home and loving care for the dogs and puppies.
