Weds 12th July: More happy adoptions

Charcoal was happy to become a Buddhist

I can see from the daily readership figures that talking about the Tai Po dogs attracts far less interest than updates on new arrivals, or photos of super-cute puppies.  Adoption photos are also very popular with both readers and everyone at HKDR, so I hope that today's Tai Po story will be a winner, as it should be.

Charcoal came to us from AFCD not too long ago, and today he left again, this time as mascot of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Cultural Centre (as well as a family dog too).  What a wonderful new life for Charcoal.
The two new Tai Po arrivals

As one dog left, another two arrived, this time via Social Services from the North East New Territories redevelopment area.  What can be seen as progress in one person's eyes can mean the loss of a home for others, and when relocated to new Government Housing, that includes the strict No Pets policy.  It's heartless and cruel, and once again the NGOs are left to pick up the pieces.   I'm fully expecting that both Caramel and Frappe will be infected with heartworm, and that means a long treatment time, not to mention the expense.  It's not the dogs' fault, it never is, but the government really need to rethink the archaic rules on keeping pets in Public Housing.

I'm so happy for Carla

Over at Kennedy Town there was another lovely adoption, this time of older puppy Carla, a very sweet girl who has been picked on by the boys recently.  So again, we're really happy to know that Carla's life has been changed for ever, and that she will be loved and cared for in a home of her own.

If you want to know why I, and all of the other long-term staff and volunteers at HKDR, stick with this work despite the long hours and regular heartbreak, it's because we can make the difference to dogs like Charcoal, Carla, and so many others who have come to us in all states of health and condition, and all ages, from newborn to senior. We will do what we can for every one of them, without giving up, until the day they are finally chosen, or they die a natural death.  There have been many times when everything seems to be overwhelming and I wonder if I can continue, but then I remember that I have many dogs that still live with me, all seniors now, and even if just for their sakes there's a reason to get up in the morning and carry on.

Gunner is happy with his new friend

There was more good news, this time for another one of the family of ten poodly types, as Gunner had his adoption confirmed.  As you may recall, these dogs came to us after  their owner had died, an old man who had done his best but who had really been unable to cope with properly caring for a large number of dogs, even if they are small.  The poodles were like one curly-coated mass at first, clinging to each other and sleeping in a pile on one bed.  Now they have become less dependent on each other, as we had hoped they would. Gunner has a new friend now, and he seems to be pretty happy with the situation.   There are still plenty of this family to choose from if you're interested in adopting, and they're all really very sweet little dogs.
There are still 7 of this family available

Sweet poodle boy Chester

I forgot to mention another adoption, this time a real poodle who was picked up directly from Acorn following his health check.  This was Curly, a very sweet boy, while Chester, who came at the same time as Curly, is still available.

We've been having quite a few potential adopters coming to meet the latest additions to our Kennedy Town North Street Centre, which is just as well because I understand there are still more on their way. The two fluffy youngsters, Corby and Cara, have been offered a home together, which is what we're always hoping will happen, but there are so many still waiting, many young, many puppies, and everything in between.

Please make sure you start by completing the adoption questionnaire if you're interested in adopting, and wait for a reply before coming to the Homing Centres.  We almost always reply with a day, if not almost immediately, so remember to check your spam inbox if you're still waiting.  The questionnaire is at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
