New today |
Monday's litter |
I spent some time playing with the dogs and puppies at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre today, and I would like to give little Salty a boost. He's a sweet dog who missed out completely on any sort of puppyhood, but he's changed from being a very nervous boy (when he first arrived) to one who loves attention and petting. What he doesn't like is people leaving, but once settled in a home I think he would overcome that issue. Like all dogs whose past is less than ideal we wouldn't consider him suitable to be with children.
Two puppies that would be great in a family home are Hattie and Harley, and they're not only sweet-natured but they're also beautiful.
New-ish arrival Ginny is also a very sweet girl, quite small at knee height, and another dog that would be a pefect family member. She's quite happy to lie quietly by your side, but she loves, loves, loves her walks too.
I was asked about re-homing a springer spaniel today, and we get quite a lot of enquiries about spaniels in general but I have to say that they are usually not suitable to be in homes with children. The exception is the Cavalier King Charles, but as I mentioned recently this breed come with a long list of serious genetic health issues. The Cavalier we currently have, Lottie, is improving after medication for pneumonia but she has the typical heart problem and bad knees (patella luxation) that are so common.
Lottie is much better after treatment |
Cocker spaniels and springers both have a tendency to be snappy, and in extreme cases unpredictable and I would never recommend either for homes with no experience or with children. They look adorable but "spaniel rage" is something that's real unfortunately. I suspect that's why the once-popular cocker is rarely seen in Hong Kong these days, that and the constant ear infections.
If you are interested in a springer spaniel please let me know. This is a breed that loves water and swimming and must have good exercise, and no children in the home.
