This time is forever for Scribble |
I was so happy to see one of our dogs leaving Kennedy Town today, and I hope (and believe) that this time it's really forever. Scribble has had such bad luck before, and she was really unhappy at the Homing Centre with the annoying puppies bothering her, but today she was chosen to become a new member of a loving family.
I can't stress enough that dogs are individuals with emotions, different personalities, likes and dislikes. It's upsetting to receive enquiries to adopt with words like "I want a small dog so I don't have to take it for walks", as if small dogs don't have a brain that enjoys seeing and experiencing life outside the home, or meeting other dogs and people. I'm sure there would be outrage if small humans were considered to have different needs from tall people.
My Lamma dogs have such a variety of personalities, and acknowledging them as individuals is the most important part of enjoying a happy relationship with them. While some are sensitive and needy, others are completely the opposite, and each one has to be handled and treated according to their character.

As regular readers will know, there's a separate Small Dogs House on Lamma for those who can't cope with staying at the Homing Centre. Most of them are too timid, while some had behaviour issues that were made worse by not having enough space to run around. (The most recent additions to the Small Dog House are the two pug puppies, but I know their stay will be a short one. They don't have any behaviour issues, they just want to have fun). Donny the shiba inu stays at the Small Dog House too, and he gets along with the other dogs for the most part, even if he's picky about his friends. I had to laugh to see Donny's new best friend, one who never fights or argues, and lets Donny do anything with him. This is also the perfect dog for anyone who doesn't like dirt, dog hair, walking, training or grooming their dog. He doesn't bark either!

I want to thank Concordia Pet Care for their just-ended campaign to help feed our many hundreds of HKDR dogs. I was upset with myself for not sharing this on time, because as I was about to add to the "free" donations list yesterday I saw that the campaign had just ended. Thankfully 930 people saw and supported anyway, resulting in 386kg of dog food being donated.
Caring for stray animals is not something to be accomplished overnight. In the days ahead, we would like to invite everyone to continue to pay attention to stray animals so that they'll no longer suffer from the pains caused by irresponsible humans.
