Rumba the golden retriever was adopted today, and I'm guessing there will be a lot of people who think she's beautiful and are kicking themselves for missing the opportunity to take her home. The fact is that Rumba has been with us for two months, after she came as one of the thirty-plus ex-breeder dogs. She and the other golden retriever, Zumba, were in very poor condition, with scabies and who-knows-what causing the hair loss. There was a flurry of enquiries and several meetings to start with, but nobody wanted to take either dog home because of the way they looked. Now after treatment and really quite a short time, Rumba and Zumba have a full coat and beautiful temperaments to match. Zumba is still available for adoption but now it's us who can afford to be picky about who is lucky enough to take her home.

Small-sized Nigel the husky was in that same ex-breeder group, and his condition was far more serious that just appearance as he had a chronic lung infection that required special (and expensive) treatment, and even then nobody knew if it would be effective. The eight-hourly injections meant a staff member staying at the Tai Po Homing Centre to ensure they were given on time, and finally we got the good news that Nigel's treatment was effective and he can mix with other dogs and be put up for adoption.

As always, if you are interested in adopting any of our HKDR dogs please complete the Adoption Questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt).

An unexpected delivery at Tai Po |
Also at Tai Po, we accepted a litter of seven baby pups, just three weeks old, which were then sent on to our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre where they tucked into a big meal. One however had a badly injured paw and he (she?) needed to go straight to Acorn to have it looked at. I won't show the photos as they're pretty horrible, but we need a foster home for all the puppies and especially this little baby. Please email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com if you can take a minimum of two pups until they are old enough to be adopted at eight weeks.

Feeling much better after a meal and having a soft bed |
We don't normally take in puppies that haven't come from AFCD, but as it happens we don't have many young ones at the moment other than the three with tick fever, so the timing was very lucky.

The new AFCD puppies |
After I posted a list of dogs adopted last month and the name Cassius was included, someone pointed out that his going home photo had never been shown on the Hong Kong Dog Rescue Facebook page or my blog. So here it is, the happiest day of his life for Cassius.

Cassius and Jolene leaving Tai Po |
I'm sad to have to write about the loss of Hong Kong's much-loved Animal Communicator Rosina Arquarti Burrows. I had known Rosina for a very long time, years before her husband, who was then Senior Vet at AFCD, encouraged me to set up an organisation to enable me to be able to take dogs out of Government Kennels at Pokfulam. That organisation was of course HKDR, and Rosina and Dave went on to adopt several pomeranians, as well as Rosina becoming both an author, animal communicator and teaching others how to do the same. She leaves a legacy of kindness and compassion, and a huge number of admirers who followed in her footsteps or were helped by her in many other ways.
