Sat 18th Aug: FAQ and fostering info

These 4 puppies are staying at Tai Po Homing Centre
Having taken in six young puppies from AFCD just this week, as well as the many we already have that are waiting for homes, another four that were slightly over the "golden age" for adoption were sent to Tai Po instead of staying at Ap Lei Chau.  I'd been told about these pups and that they were being kept at a temple on Lamma but were no longer wanted and in danger, so I said I would take a look at them after they had been sent to AFCD.  Initially they were terrified and I was concerned that they were a bit too old to change, but once they had settled in kennels after a few days, I took them out.  Now after just a short time at our Tai Po Homing Centre I was told they are all happy and wagging their tails, so they are ready to go to real homes.  Homing Centre Manager May asked if they could join the Whiskers N Paws afternoon but I had to say no due to the fact that we will be inside again and we already have a lot of candidates for adoption, so just in case you are living in the New Territories and looking for a friendly puppy, these four are waiting.

With the rain still hanging around I keep being asked if the Puppy Afternoon at Whiskers N Paws will still take place, as well as many other frequent questions .  All information about our opening hours and how to get to the two Homing Centres, as well as everything else you need to know, is on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com, including the adoption questionnaire, but for the record here are the most frequently ask questions:

Another question about fostering that comes up a lot, starts with what fostering actually means and low long is a typical foster period.  Fostering means temporarily taking care of a dog or puppy, either until it finds a permanent home or, in the case of post-surgery or treatment for heartworm as an example, until the dog is fully healthy.

If you foster a puppy it will need to be brought to the Sunday puppy afternoons every week, either until it finds a home or is returned to us.  For puppy fostering we do ask for a minimum time commitment because one-week foster periods aren't helpful and are unsettling for a puppy.  Unfortunately of the several puppies that were taken for fostering last Sunday three have already been returned, and while being a foster doesn't involve the commitment of adoption it's not fair on the puppy being moved for just a few days so it still needs careful thought.  Most of our puppy fosters are amazing, and the difference it makes to the lucky foster babies in terms of toilet training and general behaviour really helps.

All foster homes are given food, monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention if needed as well as bed, bowls etc, and pre-arranged Acorn vet visits are covered by HKDR.  If you are interested in becoming a foster parent please email our volunteer Foster Coordinator, Cindy, at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, and thank you.
