Weds 14th Sept: Breeder rejects

Puppy Lemsip went off to a foster home
Hong Kong dodged another wet and windy bullet as the anticipated typhoon changed direction and sped off elsewhere, much to the relief of all of us who were worried about the dogs.  I usually stay home on Wednesdays, but thinking that there would be no sampans on Thursday, decided to go over today instead.  In any case puppy Lemsip had been offered a foster home and needed to make the Lamma Channel crossing, so I took him over myself.
Pocket and Gertie

Arriving at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre I was greeted as usual by all the dogs, except new sharpei Gertie and tiny Yorkie Pocket who were both fast asleep, with Pocket snuggled up to Gertie as though they had always been the best of friends.  I'd been told Gertie was good with small dogs but to see her like that, so accepting of the little stranger tucked up to her, was such a heartwarming sight that I asked Andrea to take a photo.  In fact that didn't happen immediately and it was Iris who later sent me the photo, although by then positions had changed slightly and Pocket wasn't as tightly snuggled as before, but it's still a lovely moment.
Pocket probably came from a breeder

If anyone is interested in adopting with of these lovely dogs please complete the adoption questionnaire on the website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt).  We have many very sweet smaller dogs at the moment so it's a good time to be looking.
Gertie is a breeder reject

A new breeder dog came to us today, a reject due to what is probably a dislocated shoulder from an injury.  This is another really tiny dog, a miniature teacup poodle weighing less than two kilos, and as cute as these mini mini dogs are they are prone to injury simply because they are so small and easy to accidentally tread on or trip over.  This particular girl, who is one year old, will be seeing a specialist surgeon on Thursday to assess the possibility of saving the leg but the likelihood is that it will need to be amputated.

We have no information on this German shepherd yet
Another breeder reject will be coming to us on Thursday or Friday, this time a large one year-old dog who I'm told was about to be sent to be put to sleep.  She is coming from a well known German shepherd breeder and has failed to meet their standards for reasons unknown.  The photo shows that she (still) has flopped ears and maybe that's the reason, or she may have any one of the many genetic defects this breed known to have.  I can only think of English bulldogs as a breed that has a longer list of inherited health issues, with German shepherds also prone to GDV, commonly known as bloat.
