Fri 16th Sept: Momo's update

It seems the story of the golden retriever Momo is all over Facebook, so to quickly update:

Momo is standing after a night of good care
Momo was brought to Acorn by volunteers and was quickly seen by Dr Tony.  The screw worm maggots were a result of open pressure sores which came from Momo not having been able to stand or walk for a year, and him being left outside with no bedding or real protection from the weather and flies. I was told his food was cut down to bare survival amounts because he was unable to move, though why this should mean starving a dog I have no idea.  Momo has heartworm of course, but he is too old and sick to be given the usual treatment, and he also has a low red cell count as well as high white cells, both results being expected given his overall condition and lack of even basic care.  What is surprising is that other than the obvious physical issues (emaciated frame and lack of mobility), the vital organs aren't in bad shape considering, and after a night spent at Acorn with full supportive care, including pain relief,  Momo was able to stand by the morning.
Maggots from fly eggs laid in an open wound can hatch within a matter of hours and begin eating into flesh

Now we are looking for a home for him so he can at least live out his remaining days in comfort and eating properly.  He will need to be supported by a sling (towel or special harness) when he stands or walks, but hopefully with good food inside him and a soft bed his condition and strength will improve considerably.  Whatever happens he will no longer have to suffer pain or the misery of a lovely life in a stinking wooden box on a roof.  Please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com if you can offer a retirement home to an old dog who really deserves the very best in his remaining time.
A sling like this is easy

Cases of cruelty and neglect like these should be reported to SPCA so abusive owners can be prosecuted.  It's one thing saving a dog's life but action needs to be taken against anyone who causes suffering to any animal.  Please make a note of the number to call if you see anyone harming or mistreating an animal in any way.

Now some happy news with the adoption of older puppy Sidney from our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre.  He will be going to live with another ex-HKDR dog in a home with a big garden and lots of space to run and play, so well done Sidney on landing yourself a plum spot.
Lucky Sidney is off to start a new life
