Tues 10th Jan: A variety of dogs to consider

Elvin (l) and Elsie were someone's dogs before

The ex-breeder pekes and pug were picked up from AFCD first thing in the morning, along with two mixed breeds who are now at our Tai Po Homing Centre.  They have been called Elsie and Elvin, and maybe someone will recognise them as they were abandoned at AFCD by their now ex-owner.  It would be nice to have some information about these dogs that we take in, but unfortunately that's quite rare.

Gherkin

As we already knew, two of the pekes will need radical surgery, with the worst of them (a male now called Gherkin) having the following (as detailed by the vet at Concordia Pet Care):

Left eye has exposure keratitis + very wide eyelid opening. Right eye has previous ulcer and is totally blind.  Brachycephalic syndrome, with facial fold dermatitis, bilateral otitis (both ears infected) and severe dental disease.

The blind eye will need to be taken out, while the left eye will require long-term lubricating eye drops.  Surgery to remove the facial fold is essential, while soft palate resection is also recommended.  The ears will need daily cleaning and ear drops until the infection is resolved.

Girl Pumpkin is the healthiest peke

Remember, these dogs have been kept by a breeder for six years in this condition, as well as being forced to produce puppies for selling.  They were surrendered to AFCD with expired licenses, but there are no repercussions for this.
Pickles is also a girl

This 1 year-old "Sammy" isn't with us yet

It was another day of surprises, with a surrender request for a young samoyed which had grown to be bigger than expected, and a walk-in surrender request for a chihuahua which had only been bought from a pet shop the previous day.  Once again, to expose the lack of accountability of the breeders and pet shops, this "chihuahua" is clearly mixed with a pom, even though the official paperwork claims the puppy is a purebreed.
Pom-chihuahua Sparky

Regardless, at ten months of age, I have no doubt now-Sparky (because he's full of energy) will easily find a new home, and one that will keep him for longer than a day. I should mention now that even the smallest of dogs need adequate exercise and socialisation, which includes playing with other dogs.  You can see from the video of Sparky that he really is a little livewire.

Hudson in August.

If you're not into hiking and hours of exercise, we do have a fantastic little dog who came to us as a young puppy whose back legs were completely useless.  Hudson, now around seven months old, was happy and playful even then, but he had to drag himself around by his front legs, a very unhappy sight and situation.  Now, following two surgeries, Hudson is able to walk pretty well, but only on level surfaces.  An ideal home would be one with lots of space and perhaps a garden or terrace, and children that could play with Hudson to keep him entertained.  As a terrier, Hudson would also suit anyone with allergies to a regular dog coat.   I should also mention that when Hudson is a fully grown adult, he will probably benefit from hip surgery, but that may not be necessary now that his knees are properly aligned.

If you're interested in any of these dogs, please complete the adoption questionnaire as a first step: www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/
