Farley on Sunday |
There's good news after Sunday's meetings at Whiskers N Paws, with two puppies having lovely homes offered. One of these is "F" doglet Farley, who'd only just moved in to take the place of his brother Fitz at the store, and who will himself be leaving again on Tuesday. I knew it was time for these lovely boys to be chosen. Finley will be replacing Farley at Whiskers N Paws, and let's hope his time there will be as short as his brothers' was.
I'd also mentioned the "M" dachshund-cross puppies, Melody, Mason and Max, after those amazing "dance" photos taken on Sunday, and it's Max who seems he will be the first lucky one of the three. I'll confirm that later in the week.
Some of you will have seen our Facebook and Instagram posts so will know about HKDR's dire current financial difficulties, something I've also written about in recent blog posts. It's a difficult decision to go public about such matters because there's always the feeling that we'll scrape through, just as we have done in the past when things have been tight, but the past few years have had a huge impact on our income, which comes almost entirely from donations and fundraising events. We've also had to move from our Ap Lei Chau Centres to new locations, and all of that upheaval has had an effect in so many ways.
Puppy Cola |
In addition to everything else, the recent intakes of dogs have had more than their fair share of problems requiring expensive surgeries to fix. There's little puppy Cola whose previous leg fracture had healed badly and needed to be completely re-done, and on top of that particular issue it seems she will also have to have both knees operated on when she's older.
Doglet Mindy (who just became a foster fail!) had to have her leg amputated when any attempt to repair her "limp" (as described to us before she arrived) would have been futile, while poodle Marcus (another one with a "limp") not only needed hip surgery but now also requires extensive physiotherapy to get him to use his leg again.
Marcus had been in pain for a long time |
Now just today we found out that one of the most recent intake of six adult dogs, Ella, needs knee (patella) surgery on both sides, and the list goes on. We can't know in advance about the extent of the injuries or genetic issues like the patella luxations, and in any case what would happen to these poor dogs if we just turned them away?
For now, we're going to need the help of everyone who's able to donate to get us through this critical period. My own life over the past twenty years-plus has gone entirely into helping the dogs, and so many thousands of dogs have been saved during that time. Of course it's not only myself that's been a part of this story, as there are thousands of others who have joined HKDR in one way or another since 2003, including staff, volunteers, fosters and adopters, as well as the all-important donors.
