Mon 5th June: Special volunteers needed

We've got the fencing, now we need someone to put it up!
Before I forget I need to ask if anyone can help with renovation work at Tai Po, both overseeing the work and actually providing labour.  The volunteer who had originally been in line for the job is now not available, so we're suddenly in a situation where we have all of the materials but no labour.  If anyone knows of a good construction company that can be trusted to do a good job without charging a fortune, please let Jamie know at jamie@hongkongdogrescue.com, thank you.

New volunteers needed
I'm also recruiting new volunteers for the puppy adoption afternoons which take place at Whiskers N Paws every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.  We need capable and mature individuals who can talk to potential adopters and help with the selection process.  As with all volunteers one thing that's really important is commitment to the job, meaning that although it's understood that most people can't be there every single Sunday, we do need those who can be there on a regular basis.  Getting to know the puppies themselves, as well as the routine and adoption requirements, is important and it's disappointing to spend time training someone and then having them lose interest.  We have some amazing and dedicated volunteers now but we could do with more as the puppy afternoons can get busy, and the summer holidays are coming up.  Please email me if you are interested: sally@hongkongdogrescue.com.

Moira has a home
It didn't take long for Moira the Sheltie to find a home and she will leave Ap Lei Chau on Tuesday with her new family.  We still have lots of small dogs available for adoption if you are interested, although please note they are not puppies.  Occasionally someone surrenders a newly-bought small breed puppy but for the most part the dogs are at least young adults.

I can say the same for ex-breeder dogs that for some reason many people think must be puppies, wrongly associating the word breeder with newborn litters.  If we get puppies they have something wrong with them, mostly fixable but not without cost, but for the most part the breeders only get rid of dogs that are no longer of use to them.  From time to time we receive dogs from breeders that are closing down, and that's the case with three that will be coming to us this week.  There are two border collies and another golden retriever, all around five years old.   If you are interested in adopting (and I'm sorry I don't have photos yet) please complete the adoption questionnaire on our website www.hongkongdogrescue.com (under Adopt).

Birdie and Martini with their foster mother
We also still have the golden retriever and poodle couple, as the home that was supposed to be taking them didn't materialise in the end.   In this case the two dogs are so closely bonded that we wouldn't consider separating them, and since the retriever is a smaller-sized version of the breed and the poodle not a tiny one, they fit together very well.   If you think you can offer a home to this very sweet couple, again please complete the questionnaire on our website.
