Mon 6th Feb: New dogs and job vacancies

Trudy gets a second chance

I know many of you are reading my blog to get first hand news of new arrivals, but I want to start with the happy news about Trudy, adopted from HKDR as a puppy and then returned as a doglet.  The reason was nothing to do with Trudy's behaviour, and indeed she proved to be a great little dog during her stay at Tai Po, so we're all thrilled that she has found a new family.

Yuri (l) and Yvette

It's worth mentioning that the time has come to move more older puppies from Kennedy Town to Tai Po, just like recent additions Yvette and Yuri, so if you live in the New Territories and you're interested in adopting you can visit our Tai Po Homing Centre, 6 Shek Lin Road, first.   We open every single day from 10am to 6pm, but there is a period between 1pm and 3pm when the dogs have a free-running time around the compound so please try to avoid those times.

The new small-medium dogs were due to arrive on Wednesday, but they turned up today instead.  There are six of them, and they'll be heading off to the vet on Tuesday morning so please don't turn up at our HKDR@Elgin Centre until they're back.  We don't know their ages as none were microchipped, so all of that will be done while they're at ALCVC, including age assessment.  If you're interested in any particular ones, and complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

I want to mention once again that we have vacancies for paid staff at all of our Centres, meaning Tai Po, Kennedy Town and HKDR@Elgin.  Thanks to our dedicated volunteers we've just about managed to keep going, but we do need full time, or even part time, staff to ensure that all bases are covered, literally.

Being a dog lover is obviously essential, but we also require that:

Applicants must be over 18 years of age, hold a Permanent HKID and be able to speak both English and Cantonese.

You must have a flexible approach to the work, meaning being willing to be part of a team that does everything necessary.   This covers care and feeding of the dogs and puppies, walking them as needed, giving medicines, cleaning up, grooming, talking to potential adopters and all of those things that you might have seen our HKDR staff undertake.

You must have a mature attitude and be able to handle stressful situations in a calm manner.

We're happy to consider young applicants (but over 18) and to provide training, or applicants of any age as long as it's understood that the work can be physically hard.  Many of our staff and volunteers have been a part of HKDR for a long time, and we hope that anyone wanting to join our team will have this in mind.  It's a vocation as much as a job, and while there are lots of challenges there's also reward in knowing that you're doing something that's meaningful and making a big difference.  In fact you can say that you're saving lives, and it doesn't come better than that.

If you're seriously interested, please send your CV to info@hongkongdogrescue.com, including which Centre you're applying for.
