Thurs 14th June: Invasion of the breeder dogs

Nine of the breeder dogs (3 have gone to foster)
What a day!  Twelve small ex-breeder dogs arrived at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre and had to go to AFCD with me first thing in the afternoon to have their microchips scanned and my Temporary Keeper status registered.  Two of the dogs had no licenses and all of the other ten licenses had expired meaning everyone had to be given a rabies vaccination before being taken to Acorn for checking.  At the same time I had five of my Lamma puppies also needing to go to Acorn for a blood test to confirm that they had fully recovered from tick fever, and to be given their second vaccination.  Adding to the total in the van was a new puppy, a little black girl who is still waiting for a name at the moment.
Today's new puppy girl

The benefit of the breeder dogs having had licenses is that we knew their ages, but it was a huge shock to discover that one, a cocker spaniel, was seventeen years old, with a couple of thirteen year-olds and the youngest being six.  Several dogs had severe ear infections, all had stinking and rotten teeth, and the best that could be said of this sad group was that they had come via a groomer and had been washed and cleaned up before arrival.   Now we need foster homes so we can start the process of having all of the dogs desexed and brought back to good health as much as their age allows. Please email Cindy as foster@hongkongdogrescue.com if you can help out, thank you.
We're rather full at Ap Lei Chau now!

Saolor and her siblings had seemed to be perfectly fine

It was a real blow and totally unexpected to find that my Lamma pups' red cell count had dropped, as they have all grown like weeds and look perfectly healthy.  They had previous been treated with Berenil and it seemed to have worked, but it appears that was only a temporary solution and now they have to start on the "Liquid Gold".  Having one puppy needing medication three times a day is one thing, but having to give the liquid and tablets to a whole litter is time-consuming and difficult.  Still, if it has to be done, it will be.

Our beautiful young pointer boy Teddy went to  foster home today in preparation for his hip surgery. Both Teddy and his sister Dolly are such amazing dogs, huge but so soft and sweet.  Why they weren't adopted as puppies when they first came to us is a mystery, but both are still available.  They are safe with children, and I'm pretty sure cats would be no problem either.
Teddy stayed at Ap Lei Chau for a while and was like an angel
