Sat 3rd Dec: Hope for the broken

This little girl has a home waiting
It was a big day for one of our little dogs today, or two if you count the promise of a home for the "hernia pom" I wrote about yesterday.  She should be coming on Monday and can go straight into the kind of life she could never have dreamed possible, so that's something to look forward to.  I was told that there are actually many more of these broken breeder dogs, but the person who rescues them didn't want to over-burden our resources by asking me to take them all.  I said I was sure we could find sponsors for individual cases as needed, because the thought of these poor dogs and what they have been through touches many hearts.  Having seen what can be done to help, both in veterinary terms and new homes, I can't bear the thought of leaving any behind that can be saved.
It's only a trial for now, but a great chance for Banjo

Banjo is the little dog I was referring to initially, and he was also an (emotionally) broken dog when he came to us from a home where he was kicked and abused.  No wonder it took time for him to trust, but there were still volunteers who made the effort and with them Banjo was a different character altogether, sweet and affectionate.  I can't even remember how long he's been waiting for his chance, although it's years rather than months, and finally today it came.  Now we are holding our collective breaths to see how it turns out, hoping that all goes well and Banjo will stay for ever.

Volunteers at St Stephen's Fete today

A group of volunteers were out at Stanley today for the annual Christmas Fete, and from the photos it looked like a really great day.  Our HKDR stall was selling merchandise and face painting, which is always very popular with the children and the young-at-heart.  Thanks to Angela for her talents, and to the other volunteers for helping.

As a small thank you to volunteers and supporters, we arrange a Christmas Party every year to which everyone is invited.  It's free for staff and volunteers and for guests we ask $100 to help cover the extra cost, and I can now announce this year's date and venue.  It's a little bit different being an afternoon rather than evening, but we expect many will continue to celebrate after the party has officially ended.

The date to save is Saturday 17th December, 3.30pm to 6.30pm, at Ayuthaiya, 35 Hollywood Road, Central (close to the escalator).  Details and registration will be posted soon, but you can add this to your Christmas list for now.
