Sun 9th Oct: Babette's big adventure

The runaway returns
Can there be a day without dramas?  Today it was Babette who was the cause when she bolted from the car park at Horizon Plaza after the crate fastenings broke as the dogs were being unloaded from the van, and disappeared.  She's done that short ride from the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre every Sunday for the past almost-year and she walks into the crate quite willingly, but obviously she was completely freaked out by what happened.  Still, the fact that she ran and kept running was totally unexpected, and there were several search parties sent out after she had been seen on the main Wong Chuk Hang Road, on the wrong side of Ap Lei Chau bridge.   In the end it was the Whiskers N Paws team that found her, with the help of passers by who had reported seeing her running by.  It's really quite incredible, and scary, that a dog can go so far in such a short time and for no real reason.

With the panic over we were able to get down to the business of puppies, and there were a few lucky ones today leaving just two beautiful babies still waiting (more are due this week).  The photographers today were students Gioia Cheung and Andrea Phillips from the Chinese International School.  They are part of a team called Optic who try to find dogs homes by offering their photography skills, and what a great job they did.

Curry will go to his forever home next week
I made a mistake with names last week and said Curry had been adopted when in fact it was his sibling Tikka, and Curry's turn came today.  Or rather he went to an interim foster home before going to his forever family next week.

Beautiful Beano adopted
Beano stole everyone's hearts including the family who actually adopted him, and there are now two left from this special litter.

Hunter
Hunter was also chosen after I had recommended him as being a very sweet and easy boy, which is true, and I hope he will continue to prove me right.
Treacle always thought she was adopted anyway

It was long overdue but worth the wait as Treacle's adoption was formalised (she has been with her family since she was a bottle-fed baby), and Mole-now-Mocha came back to have her photo taken.  I love seeing how previous babies turn out and Mole is just as I imagined, full of energy and leading the games of chase all afternoon.  Her family love her.
Mole is now Mocha

We really need some action at our own Ap Lei Chau Centre, as two more dogs were added to the already over full space, and not small ones either.  What I thought was going to be one basset hound arriving turned out to be two, a mother and her daughter, but at least they will be leaving together on Wednesday with their adopter.  There were  lots of visitors but no actual takers, and I think it's time for me to start thinking about moving some of the grown up puppies - but where to?

Bulldog Zippo wasn't responding to the injections he had been given, which was disappointing although not unexpected, so Dr Tony suggested taking an X-ray in advance of the planned MRI.  Even the X-ray clearly showed what the problem is, a collapsed hemivertebrae, so on Monday Zippo will have the MRI to establish the condition of the spinal cord.  There is a strong possibility that Zippo will never be able to walk again, which is incredibly sad for such a young and lovely dog.
