Sun 16th Oct: Perry's special diet

Perry's health was ignored for too long
Regular readers of my blog may remember the three Basenji boys who came to us, a father and his two sons, and that the father (now called Perry) was initially passed to someone else before ending up at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre.  Perry is seriously ill with a genetic disease which tends to affect this breed, and as a result is suffering from renal failure and needs to be on a lot of medication as well as a special diet.  The problem with the commercial Renal Diet food available is that Perry hates it, and it's very difficult to get the tablets into him when he's refusing to eat.  Home cooked food if properly balanced is always the best option if you have the time, and as with a previous dog we had, Captain, we're asking for volunteers who can prepare meals for Perry and bring them to the Homing Centre (we can freeze batches to make it more convenient).  There are also certain types of canned food which are suitable and you can find all the information on what is needed at http://dogaware.com/health/kidneydiet.html.  We know that Perry's condition has been allowed to deteriorate to the point where a complete reversal is impossible, but we would like to extend his life as long as he is comfortable and enjoying it.

Hunter found his new family today
It was a beautiful afternoon to show off all of the new puppies at Whiskers N Paws, and for people to buy their Peak to Fong T-shirts (I saw a quite few changing hands).   We had a new volunteer photographer, Dani Bartlett, doing the honours and you can see the full set of lovely shots here
Hunter, who had come back from a previous trial adoption, was chosen again and this time for keeps.
First time lucky for Maisy

Sisters Maisy and Alice were also lucky, while beautiful Tanner will be leaving for a foster home on Monday with a potential adopter very interested.

Opportunities for a paid job at HKDR are few and far between as almost all positions are filled by volunteers, but we are looking for a self-motivated person to oversee the maintenance and repair of our Tai Po Homing Centre.  I have mentioned this before but forgot to include the fact that applicants should already have a valid Hong Kong work visa, and preferably be bi-lingual with a leaning towards Cantonese if one language isn't as good as the other.  Anyone interested in this position must be able to work without supervision or the need to be told what to do, and basically it involves ensuring the upkeep of the Homing Centre to a high standard and making sure the dogs have proper housing and shelter.  Anyone interested please email me at sally@hongkongdogrescue.com

The renovation of the Tai Po Homing Centre has been kick-started with funds raised specifically for that purpose at this year's "Game of Bones" gala event, and it's important that all of the work done can be maintained, as well as other part of the site.  We're also going to do the same at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre which, after a few years of operation, is also in need of a complete re-fit.

To help us carry out the work, especially at Ap Lei Chau, we will need to move dogs out into temporary homes for the duration of the renovations, so if anyone can help by taking in a little boarder please let Cindy know at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.   We don't have a date set yet as we need to plan what we are going to do, but it would be helpful to have foster homes on standby for when they are needed.
