This is how the schnauzers were sent to Acorn |
The big story of today is undoubtedly the arrival of the breeder schnauzers, even if there turned out to be eight rather than ten as we had been told. Nevertheless, the fact that they turned up at Acorn Vet Hospital all stuffed into one cage was quite horrifying, and thanks to our Foster Coordinator Cindy and volunteer May So for being there to record and photograph the dogs as they were taken out for checking and vaccination.

Safe at Ap Lei Chau and waiting for a bath |
In case you are wondering about the breeder and why the schnauzers were thrown out (actually escaped would be a better word), I don't know. I have asked for some background but didn't get a reply. This isn't the first time we've taken in multiple breeder dogs by any means, and how could I forget the sudden arrival of over twenty English bulldogs back in 2010, some mothers with newborn pups (only one survived). The largest group of over thirty poodles, schnauzers, shiba inu, Yorkies and Westies was recorded on video when they came to Ap Lei Chau a few years ago, but I've been searching for the clip and can't find it. These dogs were brought to the Homing Centre stuffed into three crates, which when opened seemed like the magic box that never empties. As I recall, we had just opened the Education & Training Centre and it was used to sort the dogs out into groups while volunteers ran a conveyor belt of washing, drying and clipping.

The bulldogs at the breeder before they came to us |
Two of the new schnauzers had already left by the end of the day, and with just six remaining and quite a lot of interest I have a feeling that Iris will be very busy on Sunday and that they will all be in either foster or permanent homes by the end of the day.
Luckily one of the new poodles, Willis, was also taken into foster today, and many thanks for the offer of contributions towards his cataract surgery. He has an appointment with the eye specialist on 26th August so we will know what the cost will be then.

I loved Bomber the moment I saw him |
Finally little Bomber also got his chance and left for a trial adoption, and of course I hope it works out. He's a fantastic character, full of beans but also love, and he just needs to learn that other dogs can be fun and they aren't his enemy.
There will be a fewer pups than expected on Sunday at Whiskers N Paws as two adoptions were confirmed in advance, Tim and Mole, and Oliver is an 'almost' and has been allowed to skip this week. I hope that means that our older puppies such as Domino, Sidney and Jenna will have a better chance, because there's no getting away from the fact that the babies are more appealing to many adopters.

Jenna is such a loving girl |
It was lucky for me that today was a Saturday as I needed to find my missing dog, Bali. He had been out all night and I had no idea where he could be, so I was hoping the others dogs would help sniff him out. I did find him, right at the end of our usual walking route where he was still waiting for me to turn up. When I saw him on the path I had already almost given up hope, and could hardly believe my eyes when I spotted a little grey dog ahead of me. I don't know who was happier or more relieved, but from now on I'll be keeping a close eye on Bali throughout our walks.

I felt weak with relief when I found Bali on the path |
