Thurs 13th July: Always more and more puppies in need

I get excited about weekends approaching,  but not for the reasons most people do. It's because I look forward to the adoptions that are due to take place, and adoptions are what it's all about for me.

Of course dogs and puppies are chosen on other days too, like today when tiny baby Tyra was taken home, disappointing many other hopeful would-be adopters of this adorable puppy girl.  Don't worry though, there are still other gorgeous youngsters available, as well as young and small-sized adults.  Just remember to complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/ as a first step, and wait for our reply.

Will Bertie be lucky this weekend?

I'm sure everyone is aware that all dog rescue organisations are full to exploding with puppies, and we're all being asked to take more from various sources, including AFCD.  In previous years we were always able to find the space to squeeze more in, but that was when we could be pretty sure that they'd be adopted quite quickly.

Back when I used to keep the puppies on Lamma and transported them to Whiskers N Paws every Sunday afternoon, it would always be a busy few hours with several puppies finding homes every weekend.   The record number of adoptions for these puppy afternoons was twenty one, if you can believe it.  Of course that was an exceptionally successful one-off bonanza, but there were always empty crates to take home after every Sunday event.  Now most adoptions take place at the Homing Centres, which isn't a bad thing, and the puppy parties are more for initial meetings rather than confirmed adoptions, and for the puppies to be able to play.

I mention this because we have again been asked if we can accept nine more puppies from AFCD, as well as two poodles, and although we can take the poodles immediately, for the puppies it's a case of waiting for space.  I feel terrible about not being able to say yes immediately, but times are very different now. It's also the worst time of the year for finding both adopters and new foster homes, as so many people leave for the summer, but on the off chance that you're here in Hong Kong and can foster puppies, please complete the adoption form at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/volunteer/fostering/, or if you're already registered as a foster, email Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com.  It's likely that it might take some time to find homes for any puppies, so please only offer to foster if you can commit to a couple of months at least.
