Thurs 28th April: AFCD is never an acceptable solution

Little Mikey turned out to be a very sweet boy
It was a great feeling recently when I took the last puppy out of AFCD in Pokfulam and left a totally empty kennel block, laughingly telling the staff they could all go on holiday now.  I knew it would be a short-lived moment of happiness, as did they, and sure enough there were a lot of newcomers when I went today, only meaning to have a further two Lamma dogs' licenses updated.  All of the dogs now occupying the recently vacated spaces had been surrendered, including a traumatised chihuahua who I was warned to approach carefully, but who turned out to be a sweet little dog who was simply terrified.

Two of the other dogs were very friendly adults, with a third being a six or seven-months old puppy.  Fearing that this was an ex-HKDR puppy, I asked if that was the case and was told no, it was adopted from another organisation.  Fast forward to the evening when I was working at my computer once again, and I received an anguished message from a friend telling me that a puppy who was a regular playmate of her own dog had been taken to AFCD, and I recognised it as the same one I had seen earlier.  It had apparently chewed some stuff up, books or something, and was too full-on to handle.

The thing is, I don't care what a puppy or dog has done, if it is yours and you are responsible for it then you don't, under any circumstances, solve your problem by surrendering it to AFCD to be killed (because that is on the form that you sign).  The worst possible scenario is if you have a dog that becomes aggressive and repeatedly bites (and that doesn't apply to a puppy), and in that situation and if there is no alternative to having the dog put to sleep, you take it to the vet yourself and hold the dog in your arms while it is being injected with the fatal solution.  There is never any justification to hand your problem over to AFCD. Never.

As for the other friendly dogs whose owners had also taken the coward's way out, one came from public housing where dogs aren't allowed and the other, who rolled on its back in fear-submission and wiggled her legs in the air, had another unacceptable excuse which I can't even remember because it honestly wasn't worth the brain space.  I think it was that they had no time to take care of it but in any case it was nothing to do with any behaviour issues.

The dog inside this buggy prison is a beagle
As an update on the muzzled-dog-in-a-buggy story, it seems it's a beagle but I'm waiting to hear more from AFCD about the current situation.

  1. Its sickening to hear that this is what Hong Kong people do all the time to their pets. My heart hurts when I just read the stories day and day on. I have my Jack Russell who is a senior at age 15 and I would never ever forsake her as she is my youngest child, the one who will never ever grow up and leave the coop like my two legged kids....lol.

    1. It's not just Hong Kong people as the problem is worldwide. In fact many Hongkongers love their dogs as much as anyone else and feel the same as you do about those who give up on their pets.

  2. Until you are aware of all the facts (which I might add are NOT your business), you should not be posting about one of these dogs. Get off your soap box Sally - this is ridiculous.

    1. It's true I don't know the background to many dogs' stories and can only try to help when asked. But since you are commenting here maybe you CAN answer the question about the dog you are referring to (and yes I know which one).

    2. When anyone surrenders their pets to AFCD it's everybody's business as AFCD works with animal groups to find families for these animals.

    3. YC - Sally has saved thousands of dog's lives and she has every right to express her frustrations here. By the way, how many dogs lives have you saved?
If you know the true story, then share it with us here so we all can learn the truth.
I have 3 HKDR dogs and I am continually horrified and saddened at the way dogs are dumped and given up for the simplest of reasons/ excuses! If your puppy chews up your books, or whatever, don't get a puppy!!!! I have dogs all my life, and now I choose not to go through that puppy stage anymore, I now only want to adopt adult dogs.
As I said, if you know the facts then share them with us, don't bad mouth Sally!!!

    5. Firstly I myself have two rescue dogs and I support rescue organisations fully however I don't support online harrassment and shaming over a story you don't understand. As for providing you with reasons Sally I believe you received an email outlining the details so I don't need to go over them here with people who have no business in this situation.

    6. I apologise for trying to help. I will leave you to find your dog a home yourself.

  3. Of course it's Sally's business! She is the one who is left to pick up the pieces, or would you prefer she leaves them to die?

    1. I suspect the dog y.c. is referring to is one that I was asked by a third party to help and is not yet at AFCD. Only guessing.

  5. YC - what a bitter tone in your comment - especially fresh coming from someone who is not dealing with life and death issues of animal welfare. Oh perhaps you are which means encouragements and solutions to the problem would be highly appreciated. So if you don't have anything good to say, keep it to yourself in your little corner. Someone here in Hk is doing a lot more for these dogs than you are - just saying.
