Weds 7th Sept: All change for Archie and Alexi

Alexi at the front door

I have been saying that we wanted to keep siblings Archie and Alexi together as they are very close and do everything as a pair.  However, while this is still true, it seems as they have settled at our HKDR@Elgin location and are now starting  to feel comfortable with their surroundings, they have taken over control of both floors.  With Alexi in charge and Archie following as her support, they have to check everyone that comes in, bark when they feel they need to, and sometimes bully the smaller dogs.  This behaviour isn't uncommon in siblings who know they have back-up so feel more confident, and I have previously had to separate similar pairs when leaving them together was affecting their interactions with other dogs.  So now, although I would love to keep this undeniably cute brother and sister together, and still would if the right home suddenly came along, it looks as though we will have to let them go individually.  Alexi is a bit bigger than Archie and the leader of the pair, but both are still lovely dogs.  I don't want to give the impression that they're naughty or aggressive in any way, it's just that we don't have the space to keep them together any longer.

There is an alternative that had come to me, and that is to ask for weekend and night time foster care for Alexi and Archie, meaning that people who were out at work during the day could pick the pair up for the night and drop them back in the morning, and the same for weekends.  It's like a half-foster, the only proviso being that it would mean being able to drop and pick up the dogs during opening hours.  Please let us know if this sounds like something you'd be interested in doing, and you can email me at sallyandersen@hongkongdogrescue.com.

All of the Elgin Street dogs have to move to Kennedy Town on Thursday, and it would be wonderful if they found their own homes before they had to make that move and start the settling-in all over again.  Seeing them now and the way they have come out of their shells is really lovely, so it would be a shame if they retreated back to their initial fearful behaviour.

As a reminder in case you think we close for holidays, our Homing Centres are open every single day of the year from 10am to 6pm.  All we ask is that you complete the adoption questionnaire before coming to visit, and wait for a reply. The questionnaire is at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Adorable Hudson

Terrier puppy Hudson went back to Concordia for a check-up on his legs, and it was decided that the knee (patella) surgery needed to be done again to improve the results even further.  Although the first operation was a success in that Hudson could stand up and walk a bit after having previously only dragged his back legs behind him,  Dr Elaine felt that it was worth going in again to try to get Hudson walking better so when he was old enough to have hip surgery, his chances of being (almost) normal would be much better.
