It seems to be ages since the last Whiskers N Paws puppy afternoon and it's quite a task to keep up to date with all of the pups in their various foster homes. Our Foster Coordinator, Cindy, is away for a week so I've taken over for that short time and I'm already wondering how she manages on a regular basis, bearing in mind that she has a family and a "real" job too. I'm so grateful to our team of volunteers, whether they are working behind the scenes or helping with the dogs at either of the Homing Centres, because without them we just couldn't function. Of course the foster parents themselves are also invaluable, and thanks to everyone who took in baby boarders for the Lunar New Year break or longer. You can see very sweet updates on many of the pups on our Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) Facebook page if you're thinking about adopting, and guess what? There are even more to choose from after I took four more gorgeous and waggy-tailed fluffies from AFCD today.

The 2 baby shiba inu crosses |
I bumped into the foster of the shiba inu, Lucy, and her two baby pups at Acorn today, and it seems everyone is doing well and settling down after a fraught and worrying start. Knowing that two of the puppies had already died I didn't know how the surviving pair were faring, but they are thankfully fine. Looking at the photo of them that was sent from Tai Po when they first arrived I can see that they do look like little shiba inu faces, but we have no idea who the father is or how big these kiddies will grow to be. All three will be available for adoption before too long, although the pups will need to stay together until they are at least two months old.

Blondie (left) was a mess inside |
I had mentioned three senior pekes I'd taken from AFCD recently and one of them, the only female, was supposed to have been desexed according to her license. However we'd noticed that she was having some "lady issues" in addition to problems urinating, so when she went for a dental and full check-up today she was also opened up to check what was going on inside. It was just as well because whoever had spayed her previously had not only left the ovaries behind but had also done such a terrible job that there was a lot of internal scarring, and the bladder was on the point of bursting. Luckily Dr Tony is a very skilled and experienced surgeon and he was able to fix everything, but over my many years of dog rescue I have seen some shocking cases of inexperienced or plain bad surgery. Many of the ex-breeder dogs seem to have been cut up with a knife and fork on the kitchen table by the looks of them, and it makes you wonder how many die as a result and how much these poor dogs suffer if they actually live through it. Blondie must have been in pain and perhaps for many years, and had she not been operated on today she would almost certainly have been in big trouble.

Sweet 5-month Paisley |
New five month-old puppy Paisley was also with me at Acorn for her vaccinations and health check, and she is such a sweet girl. You can meet her any day at our Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre, or on Sunday at Whiskers N Paws.

Figgy has a forever home now |
There are a few puppies who won't be coming along to join the party because they have been adopted in the interim. That's Figgy, Caax-now-Kiki and two of the Little Blacks.
