Sun 29th Sept: Another month has flown by

 We have so many beautiful puppies available, and you can see the huge variety in these lovely photos by volunteer photographer Carol Chan, taken at the regular Whiskers N Paws Puppy Party Puppy Adoption Day 29th Sep 2024.  Names will be added soon, but if you can't wait to find out who your favourite girl or boy is just send the photo and we'll let you know. 

As well as puppies we have so many small dogs of all ages waiting to meet their forever families, and some of them were also at Whiskers N Paws on Saturday, photos courtesy of Sophie Burkhardt on this occasion Small dogs Adoption Day 28th Sep 2024.  I hope I don't need to say how grateful we are to all of our photographers for donating their time and skills to help out, so thank you to everyone. 

As always I was so happy to see an adoption photo from Tai Po, with this lucky girl being Dimple.  She's such a lovely character, and there are many, many more like her.  

I'm going to jump ahead of our official announcement here because I'm so happy to see one of my favourite Lamma dogs featured in our upcoming 2025 Desk Calendar.  Most of the Lamma residents are probably not really suitable for adoption, but Simone definitely is.  She's easygoing and very affectionate, loves her walks but isn't as crazily energetic as some of the others, and although I think she enjoys her life on Lamma I think what she'd really love is a home of her own.  The Calendar will be available for pre-order very soon, so please keep a lookout for the announcement. 

Can you believe we have more small dogs coming in soon, and as soon as I know when I'll be sharing photos. I know there's a white poodle and a pom, and some others that are gorgeous small mixes.

Sat 28th Sept: A full Saturday

 As anticipated it was a very busy day today, with the Small Dog adoption events at Whiskers N Paws, the first day of the weekend's event at The ONE in Tsim Sha Tsui, and non-stop visitors at our Kennedy Town Homing Centre. 

To summarise the adoptions and dogs leaving for foster homes, shiba puppy Greta was adopted, as well as poodle Curtis, shy boy Pablo, corgi Gabriel and baby terrier Pippin. Pippin's sister Petra will be joining him on a foster basis, while adult shiba Pip was also taken on a foster basis. 

Sunday will be a repeat of Saturday, except it will be puppies attending the Whiskers N Paws Party, 2pm to 4pm, and there are plenty of them at the moment.

Fri 27th Sept: Acorn moves to Kennedy Town (for the day)

 We have a busy weekend ahead, with the adoption parties at Whiskers N Paws on both Saturday (small adults) and Sunday (puppies) from 2pm to 4pm, and the weekend event at The ONE in Tsim Sha Tsui over both days.

Today (Friday) was also pretty much non-stop as all of the new arrivals at Kennedy Town were seen by a vet for their health checks and vaccinations, with thanks to Acorn for sending a vet to us rather than the other way round.  There were so many dogs and puppies that needed to be seen that we would have taken over the whole clinic if we'd turned up with everyone, so it's easier for both sides this way. 

While this was going on there were also visitors to attend to, while I'm in the hot seat trying to reply to email and Facebook messages and questions as quickly as I can.  Most of the enquiries today were regarding the newly arrived Border Collie, now Darcy, but we didn't have any information to share other than we'd been told that she has some food guarding issues with other dogs, although extremely sweet with humans.  Later I was told that she's three year old, although judging from her body condition she hasn't been properly exercised.   

In fact taking your dog out for walks isn't just about the physical exercise that's needed to keep them fit and in good shape, it's also about the mental stimulation of seeing, smelling and experiencing life in general outside of the home.  Even if you have a large garden, after a while it becomes just an extension of the home with the same smells and nothing of interest.  Of course any outside space is a huge bonus for many reasons, but unless you have more than one dog and they can play together, it's not a substitute for walks outside,  

Going back to Kennedy Town, poodle Docker has been adopted, as well as shiba puppy Gus. Weds 25th Sept: Lots of small dogs and puppies waiting!

 With my last post having been mysteriously removed by Facebook (Meta) for "not conforming to their community standards", I hope I'll be luckier this time round. 

We had what is now a regular surprise delivery of eleven new dogs and puppies to our Kennedy Town Centre, with only enough notice to allow me to frantically post a few photos on Facebook.  One of those photos attracted so much interest that I was glued to my computer for the rest of the day as I replied to all of the enquiries for the Westie, and by the end of the day he had already been picked up by his new family.  I hope that at least some of the disappointed potential adopters will choose another dog from the many that are still available, and I really mean many. 

Several of the new arrivals are small-sized puppies, with the three adorable terriers still very young (and tiny), and others just slightly older. 

We are also expecting a border collie to be dropped off at our Tai Po Homing Centre on Thursday, and although I don't have any information yet about age or anything else, this is a popular breed so I hope he or she won't have to wait long to be chosen. 

This coming weekend we'll be at The ONE in Tsim Sha Tsui, not with dogs unfortunately, but please come along to support.

Sun 22nd Sept: Who's in, and who's out

 It's been a few days since I wrote my last blog, and there have been several adoptions that I want to mention.  To be honest I've been miserable this past week because one of my favourite Lamma dogs disappeared, and I can only assume she took herself off to die somewhere, even though I hadn't even suspected she was ill.  Campari wasn't a dog that wandered, in fact she had never even chosen to come for a walk, preferring to stay close to home and only going as far as the beach, a minute from the house. Going off to die in private is natural animal behaviour, although not many dogs have the freedom to do that, but where Campari went is still a mystery. 

One thing about having many other dogs to take care of is that life has to continue as normal no matter what happens, and although it's always a matter of personal choice I feel that bringing a new dog into the home after the loss of a much loved companion helps distract from the feelings of grief.  The youngsters that I take for a walk every morning are so full of fun that it's uplifting just watching them, and they make me smile no matter what. 

Also cheering me up are the adoptions, especially from Tai Po, and it was finally labrador Beethoven's big day.  I couldn't understand why such a lovely dog, and a popular breed as well, waited so long to find a home, but at least he has now.

Dorina the Doberman has also gone for a trial adoption to see that she and the resident dog get along, and the good news is that they're already playing very sweetly together.

Unfortunately the potential home for the newly-arrived young and handsome Malinois (Belgian shepherd) didn't turn up as arranged, so Jinx is now having to stay at the Homing Centre, something we were trying to avoid.  He's a lovely dog, very friendly, so hopefully a genuine adopter will come along before too long. 

Puppy Potter had been staying at Whiskers N Paws along with another older puppy, Posy, and when Potter was adopted on Saturday we planned to leave gorgeous Giselle in his place.  However she was quickly chosen for adoption, meaning we will have to send another puppy instead.  You can see all of the puppies that were at Whiskers N Paws on Sunday here  Puppy Adoption Day 22nd Sep 2024 , with our Photography Coordinator Elena Mathew also behind the camera today. 

One of the ex-breeder shibas found her new home too, this being Georgia, one of the "G" intake that included Giselle.  Like poodles, we always have shibas waiting for homes, even shiba puppies, so in case you're interested in either breed you can always find one.  Please start by completing the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/.

Thurs 19th Sept: Character has nothing to do with looks

 There was some confusion when I posted the photo of puppies Ivy and Indigo, because although I had mentioned they had been adopted by their foster home several people just saw the picture and applied to adopt them too.  There are three more siblings in this litter of Rain Babies, but Izzy (cream) Isa (brown) and Inky (black) don't look like their fluffy sisters.  In fact it was an unusual litter in that all puppies were different colours.  Unfortunately and inevitably the cute looks attract attention, even if what's underneath in terms of character and personality are identical.  

Because all of the dogs that live with me on Lamma are only there by default, meaning they weren't adopted as puppies, I didn't actually choose any of them, so I can honestly say that the way they look or the type and colour of their coat has no bearing on their behaviour.  Maybe we should blindfold potential adopters and let them choose their puppies without being able to judge their appearance.  The first lick wins the home, or something like that. 

We always have new dogs and puppies coming in, and today was no exception although luckily it was only two arrivals. Docker is a poodle boy and Dimple a lively but small sized puppy girl, and both will be at Acorn for their health checks on Friday morning, meaning they'll be available for adoption by late afternoon or over the weekend. 

Happily one of the recent older puppies was adopted today, while Potter, who is staying at Whiskers N Paws, will be going to his new home on Saturday. 

With the very popular dogs and puppies there is almost always more than one potential adopter, so assuming all homes are equal then we will let the dog go to the one that can take it home first.  If you don't get the dog or puppy you first had your eyes on, please remember that there are many others you can consider, and we have new arrivals coming in all the time.

Mon 16th Sept: All newcomers health checked and ready to go

 Several potential adopters were waiting for the recent intake of dogs and puppies to go for their routine health checks, and those took place today at Acorn.  All were fine except the poor mother shiba who is still dripping milk, as the vet noted she was emaciated, and one of the shiba puppies from the same breeder has tick fever.

Sundays at Whiskers N Paws mean Puppy Party day, and Jimmy Tsang was there to take photos Puppy Adoption Day 15th Sep 2024.  Three of the youngsters at the event came to us as newborn "Rain Babies", while two of the siblings from the same litter were adopted by their foster home. 

We also had a wonderful donation of $4500 from the adopters of Fitz, who some of you may remember as one of the lovely "F" litter of puppies a couple of years ago. 

On Saturday two of our smaller adults were adopted, terrier-type Chelsea and Cosmo, a very cute mix of sorts.
