Weds 1st Nov: Good or bad news?

File photo of breeder poodles that came to us
I'm not sure if it's good of bad news that a disgusting illegal breeder was uncovered and the hundred-and-one dogs rescued.  http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/law-crime/article/2117848/101-dogs-freed-three-arrested-police-raid-suspected-illegal

It's good of course that this particular hellhole was discovered and will be closed down, but there are so many others doing exactly the same all over the New Territories, but mostly in the Yuen Long area.  The dogs in these puppy mills are always debarked and in the most awful way which I won't describe, but seeing how they are forced to live would sicken any normal individual.  However, it all goes back to the sad fact that these places only exist because there are customers for the puppies.  I know that if you took those same customers to the place where the mothers, and fathers, were incarcerated and made them take a look they would be horrified, so why do such people continue to hand over their money to the evil breeders, and big bucks too.  It's the old story of supply and demand, and if there was no demand these places would close down.

I know some of the buyers are those who have tried to adopt but have been rejected because their lives and homes aren't suitable for keeping a dog.  Just today I had to turn down two would-be adopters because of the long hours they were away from home and the very little exercise they could provide, and I fully expect them to go to a pet shop to buy some poor puppy who will spend the entire day alone.  The owners will then wonder why their puppy can't be toilet trained, and all of the other behaviour problems that go with home-alone pups who rarely get out.

However, not all of the pet shop and breeder customers are like this, as many are stay-at-home parents or working professionals who employ full-time helpers, and there are lots of well-off expats amongst them too. These are homes that may well be welcomed by animal rescue groups, but they choose instead to buy.  Why?  What sort of person would consciously go to a pet shop or breeder rather than adopt?  You can answer that yourselves.

Rufus found his home
Now here's some definitely good news:  we homed sixty five dogs and puppies in October!  That's sixty five lovely adopters who chose to save a life instead of supporting the cruel pet trade, and sixty five dogs whose lives have been changed for ever.  On behalf of all of those dogs and puppies, thank you.  Now let's keep up the momentum and see how many long-termers we can find homes for this month:
