Weds 16th Nov: How long is the adoption process?

Teabag moved from her foster to a real home today
One of the questions frequently asked is how long the adoption process takes, and the answer really depends on the situation.  This morning I received a questionnaire which seemed like a nice home although I didn't think that the dog specifically mentioned would be the best match.  Instead I recommended one of the Stanley Barracks doglets, Teabag, who was in a foster home along with siblings Echo and Goofy, and sent a photo with an update from the foster.  The potential adopter liked the look and sound of Teabag so Cindy arranged an evening meeting and that was it, Teabag went home.  To be honest those pups are hard to resist, not only because they are gorgeous to look at but also because they have such wonderful temperaments.  Woody is still with me on Lamma and he is a total gem, a sweet, funny and very loving boy, and you can meet him and his remaining siblings on Sunday at Whiskers N Paws.

Christmas and New Year Puppy afternoons will be on Saturday
Which reminds me, this year Christmas Day and New Year's day fall on a Sunday which means that Whiskers N Paws will be closed for our usual puppy afternoon.  So for these two weekends we will be out on the terrace on Saturday 24th and Saturday 31st December, with normal service resumed in 2017 (just around the corner).

Lucas needs a home!
After asking AFCD to contact the ex-owner of the golden retriever I took out on Tuesday, now called Lucas, we found out that he is on thyroid supplements so were able to send the appropriate medication to his current foster home.   How hard would it have been for the ex-owner to have passed that information on when he surrendered his dog, presumably to be killed.  And for what?  Because of a condition that is so easy to deal with?  Lucas is a lovely dog and is doing very well in his foster home, but it can only be short-term because there are already three other dogs in the family and this was only every an emergency stop-gap place to stay.  If you can offer a sweet senior golden retriever a home for the rest of his life, please contact Cindy at foster@hongkongdogrescue.com, thank you.
All puppies learn through biting each other

Education is an uphill battle and another case today reminded me of that, a puppy that was going to be sent to be put to sleep because it was "vicious".   How many times can we say that all puppies bite, and that while in nature they would be doing it to their siblings in their substitute family of humans they will use their teeth in the same way.  Puppies are not born understanding that there are rules and they have to be taught, in exactly the same way that human babies come into the world totally "raw".  Shouting "No!" and smacking makes the problem worse, and that's exactly what we see time and time again. If you really can't be bothered to learn how to properly train and look after a puppy then you have no business having one in the first place.  There is a really helpful website that has great training videos which we recommend to all puppy adopters, and if everyone in the family follows the methods shown it works very quickly.  All babies, animal and human, are quick to learn if they are taught correctly and consistently.  Take a look at www.dogstrust.org.uk
