King and his new daddy |
Continuing the run of good luck at Tai Po, recently arrived husky King took his "Walk of Pride" out of the Homing Centre gates leading to his new life and home. The lucky boy didn't have to wait long at all, and he has a great life ahead of him with no looking back.
I had to take the new golden retriever recruit, now called Harry, to AFCD to get him microchipped, rabies vaccinated and licensed, the ex-owner having failed to do any of this, or anything else either, so the next stop was Acorn. Harry was quite excited to be getting lots of attention, something he's probably not used to, and let's just say that the desexing surgery arranged for Tuesday will be very helpful. It takes about a month for the testosterone to fully leave the system after a dog is neutered so the results aren't instant, but for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to leave a male intact or have a bitch regularly coming into season. Apart from the behaviour issues there are so many other reasons why desexing a dog is desirable, and not doing it cruel and irresponsible.

Gertie and her sore eyes (now fixed) |
One dog who will be very relieved to have had the desexing surgery today is a new (now ex) breeder sharpei who was presumably given up by the breeder because she had the typical entropian (inward turning eyelids) of the breed. Although the condition is extremely painful and can result in eventual blindness, for this dog it was her ticket to freedom and she's now had surgery to correct the problem. Gertie is quite unusual for the breed in that she is good with other dogs, and a photo I saw showed her with other small breeds like poodles. She has someone potentially interested in adopting her but as nothing is confirmed she is available until she walks out of the door and her papers are signed. I'm told she's two years old and typically medium sized.

Benedict after grooming |
We had a visit from a Sexysushi volunteer groomer Rachel today, and she did a great job with poodle Benedict, as well as a couple of other small Ap Lei Chau dogs. We have lots of lovely little characters waiting for homes including some tiny ones who need foster homes if nothing else.
It's wine time again as we will be picking up donated cases of assorted top quality wines which will be on sale at our Ap Lei Chau office from Wednesday at the astonishingly low price of $600 for a case of twelve, which means only $50 a bottle. It's first come first served, so don't wait too long.
