Mon 3rd June: A tribute to the shy ones

Finally Lilac has her forever family

We've had some happy adoptions over the past few days, including two border collies, Womble the Samoyed, and one gorgeous little long-termer from our Tai Po Homing Centre, Lilac.  Lilac was too shy to be given any attention by potential adopters, so she waited years until her chance finally came and she was taken home on a foster basis, to try to help her gain some confidence.  She blossomed in her new environment, and with the help of the other resident dogs, and now she will be staying for ever.  These adoptions are the best, and we're all so grateful to Lilac's new family for making dreams come true.

Walter also had a very short stay

We have also seen several smaller dogs leaving our Kennedy Town Homing Centre to begin their new lives, including Walter, Rhianne and Pixie, with Julian and Jamie also moving into foster homes.

Pixie was chosen today

This has meant that we are able to accept four breeder dogs that have been waiting for space in our Kennedy Town Centre, three young shiba inu and an older poodle. The shibas are all a year old, with two boys being the typical tan colour and another female being white.  If you're interested in adopting, please start by completing the questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/.

I should also mention that the two remaining "W" dogs from the recent intake have now had their vet check, and both are in great health.  They're young too, with Whitey the poodle being a year old, and Wiska the terrier maybe not even that, and they're lovely, happy a friendly characters too.   Don't wait too long if you're seriously interested in adopting either of them.

I also mustn't forget some other little dogs that went home for trial adoptions and have now had their forever status formalised.  Miniature Pinscher Belle had to fit in with her chihuahua family, which she has done very quickly, while terrier Zilla also became one of an existing dog family.

Margaret wouldn't look at me for a last photo

As it happens I was sharing the HKDR van with Wiska and Whitey today as I had to take one of my Lamma dogs to Acorn.  Some of you may have been reading my blogs for years, or have been Facebook friends for even longer, so you may remember a very special girl called Margaret, the one with the big ears and even bigger eyes.  She was also one of the shy ones as a puppy, so adoption was never going to happen, but like all of the others she grew to be a wonderfully affectionate and loving dog, and one of those who shared my bed at night.  It was quite a shock to realise that she was thirteen year old when I made the appointment at Acorn, especially as Margaret's appearance was unchanged and she was still beautiful.  However she'd suddenly stopped eating, even the fresh chicken I cooked for her every day, and her tail was down.  I left her at the clinic to have an X-ray and other checks, but as soon as I got home I had to turn right around to head back to Acorn after the diagnosis came back as oesophageal cancer, so I could be with her when her life came to an end.  As dog caretakers we all have to face this heartbreaking inevitability, and in my situation it happens far too often these days, but Margaret was one of the special ones, and I'll miss her.
