Weds 16th Nov: The dreaded tick fever routine

These days just seem to be about getting van-loads of puppies to and from the vet, either to check if they've got tick fever, or to re-test them on a daily basis in the crucial early stage of their treatment if they tested positive.  Sadly almost every puppy that's born out on the hillsides will come to us with ticks attached, and that inevitably means tick fever will develop.  The "liquid gold" (Atovaquone) that's used to treat the disease is effective in almost every case, but it means giving the medicine three times a day, as well as the anti-nausea tablets and the antibiotic that works in tandem with the "liquid gold" (so-called because it's bright yellow and very expensive).   With so many puppies currently on the tick fever treatment regime, that's a lot of work for the Kennedy Town Homing Centre team, and it must be like a conveyor belt of puppies passing along for their turn at having the sticky yellow stuff syringed into their mouths, or the tablets pushed down their throats.

Odile has a guardian to look after her

Thankfully some of the younger puppies are in foster homes, like tiny Odile whose condition was touch-and-go for a short time.  She had to move from her foster home in Tai Po to a new one that was closer to Acorn so she could go for daily blood tests to see that she was improving, and I'm happy to say that she's now getting better.  Whereas previously she had no energy and only wanted to to held and cuddled, she's now exploring the home, as the very sweet photo shows.  Hopefully it won't be long before she's fully recovered, and these difficult days will just be a dim memory.
Life is fun for these puppies now

I'm pretty sure that the puppies now staying at our HKDR@Elgin space don't have tick fever, however most of them are quite timid around humans.  Still, thanks to a volunteer sharing this photo on our HKDR Facebook page, you can see that with each other these absolutely gorgeous pups are settling nicely and enjoying the safe and dry surroundings of the lower floor at 22 Elgin Street.  If you would like to join the volunteer team helping to socialise the puppies, and cleaning up after them of course,  please email Cam Ng at elgin@hongkongdogrescue.com

We have some more dogs coming from AFCD on Thursday, thankfully not puppies this time, and only two of them.  The larger adult will go to Tai Po to join the many others also staying there, while the smaller one, a three year-old Maltese, will be living at Kennedy Town.  I'm sure her stay with us will be a very short one.
