Fri 11th Nov: Choosing your forever dog

Yes, it's almost the weekend again and that means adoption news coming up, but although I already know the names of some that will be leaving I'm saving them until the ink is dry on the adoption form.

Before anything else I want to mention this lovely young girl, Cressie.  She has been in a loving foster home with her brother Charlie, but the time has really come for her to move to a family home of her own.  The best thing about foster homes is that you know the puppies have had the best care and love during their formative months, and that's so important.  Cressie is perfect for a home with children, and she's ready for you any time.

Meet TOP DOG Cressie in foster home! (1 year-old girl, ~19kg, so only a medium size)

🥰
Here is what her foster parents said about her,
“Cressie is very gentle to kids and other dogs. Sometimes a bit shy. She loves water and swimming. She loves to go for walks but she also a little bit lazy and loves to chill on her bed! She knows a few commands like sit and paw!” Bring our perfect girl Cressie home!
If you are interested in adopting Cressie, please take the first step by completing the adoption questionnaire. Thank you!

We don't have this dog yet, but we should be taking in a young bull terrier currently staying at AFCD. This is a special breed, like many of the bulldog types, because they're neither small nor large and finding an appropriate place for them to stay while waiting for a home can be a challenge.  The reason that I mention this particular dog is in the hope that we can have a home waiting, so when he's released he can go straight there.   If you're interested please complete the adoption questionnaire at www.hongkongdogrescue.com/adopt/adoption-questionnaire/

Many people are attracted to purebred dogs, one of the reasons being that they think they know what they're getting.  However that's not always true other than the way the dog looks, as the breeding (meaning the parents of the puppy), early care and treatment, and the type of training given plays a big part in the temperament and behaviour of an adult dog.

There are really very few dogs that I have had to have euthanised for serious aggression, but one of those was a beautiful young golden retriever.  It was obviously a very difficult thing to have to do, and although it was many years ago I remember it very clearly.  One of the issues was that nobody believed that this lovely-looking dog could be dangerous, making the situation very difficult to control. One man who insisted he knew what he was doing ended up finding out that he really didn't, and after that the dog's fate was sealed.

The small breeds suffer too from poor early care, and maybe poodles more than any other due to the fact that they're such an intelligent dog that needs exercise and mental stimulation.  We have a small Homing Centre full of these "Red Dogs" who have serious trust issues where people are concerned.  Physical or mental trauma stay with dogs throughout their lives, which is why we are very careful when it comes to homing puppies.

All "bad" behaviour can be moderated, and if lucky totally changed, but it takes time and patience. It's so much better to start off the right way so problems don't occur in the first place.

One of the biggest mistakes that a dog owner can make is to send a puppy away to one of those awful training kennels that exist.  A dog is part of your family, not someone else's, and the whole experience is so traumatic for the dog that problems in the future are almost guaranteed.

I'm going to share the available puppy list again in case you missed it yesterday, and you can ask about any of the puppies and their personalities.  Our Homing Centre staff (and volunteers) will be able to direct you to those that will be most suitable for your home and family, as each one of them has their own personality.
